Frances Tong is a self-taught fine art photographer whose journey began at seventeen, when she arrived in the United States and discovered her aunt's camera — and, through it, herself. Nature became her first language. A deep affinity for the mountains has since carried her to some of the most remote and unforgiving landscapes in the US, Japan, and China, while her curiosity for the human spirit finds equal expression in portraiture and street documentary.
Frances's images ask something rare of us: to slow down, to look inward, to let something unfold. Rooted in several decades of meditation and yoga practice, her work carries a stillness that is felt before it is understood. She paints with light the way a brush moves through ink — deliberate, intuitive, alive. Each photograph is an invitation to inhabit the purest quality of a moment, and many of her works are a quiet call toward conservation and mindful living.
First exhibited in the United States in 2000, her work has since been shown in Hong Kong and Shanghai. She now lives and works in Hong Kong.
