Between 2003 and 2005, I frequently visited the mountain villages in Guizhou when high speed trains and highways were non-existent.   The bus ride from Guiyang, the provincial capital, took 6 hours on unpaved roads, traveling at 15-20 miles per hour on bumpy roads, followed by a minimum of 3-5 hours of hiking on foot to reach some villages. There I met the poorest of the poor. This collection later became artworks showcased in the Guizhou Exhibition.
