Black & White : Fukushima

Fukushima, Japan, was, is, and always will be, close to heart.

For many years before March 11, 2011, I visited almost every season. The mountain region of Fukushima is perhaps one of the most beautiful areas in Japan, embraced by pristine lakes, ponds, and waterfalls.

All photographs were captured on manual film cameras, in both 135mm and medium format. To take each picture, I spent hours and hours waiting to get in sync with the rhythm of nature — moments of anticipation in a dark forest before daybreak, and quiet contemplation after climbing up a hill in snowshoes, with numb feet, overlooking a valley blanketed with snow, dotted with trees.

These moments later became artworks showcased in the Heart of Goodness Exhibition >>
